FAQs
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a referral?
Not to book privately. You’re welcome to contact JD Therapy directly. Bulk-billed appointments need a valid Medicare referral, usually a Mental Health Treatment Plan from your GP (see How does Medicare work for therapy?). GPs and other referrers can find information for referrers.
Do I need a diagnosis to see you?
No. You’re welcome whether you have a diagnosis, are wondering about one, or would rather not focus on labels at all.
Who do you work with?
Adults, young people and parents or caregivers. We see young people from 5 years of age, as well as teens and adults.
What happens in the first appointment?
We focus on getting to know you: what’s brought you here, what matters to you and what you’d like from our work together. You don’t need to prepare anything.
How much does it cost?
Private appointments are $225 per session. Bulk-billed appointments are available for eligible clients with an appropriate Medicare referral. NDIS services follow the NDIS Pricing Arrangements and Price Limits. Assessment fees are quoted when you enquire, before anything is booked.
How does Medicare work for therapy?
Under Medicare’s Better Access initiative, people assessed as having a mental health condition can get a Medicare rebate for up to 10 individual sessions each calendar year (1 January to 31 December) with an eligible psychologist.
You’ll usually need a Mental Health Treatment Plan and a referral from a GP. Since 1 November 2025, the plan and referral need to come from your usual GP, or from a GP at the practice where you’re registered with MyMedicare. A referral covers up to 6 sessions at a time. After that, your GP reviews how things are going and can refer you for more, up to the yearly limit. A psychiatrist or paediatrician can also refer you directly.
Bulk-billed appointments are available for eligible clients with a valid referral. We’ll confirm the arrangement with you before you book. Medicare rules can change, so please check with your GP about your own situation.
Does Medicare cover autism or ADHD assessments?
Generally, no. Medicare doesn’t provide rebates for autism or ADHD assessments with a psychologist for adults, and Better Access sessions are for therapy rather than diagnostic assessments.
For people under 25, Medicare rebates are available for some assessment sessions with a psychologist or other allied health professional when a paediatrician or psychiatrist refers them to help with diagnosing a suspected complex neurodevelopmental condition, such as autism. In that pathway, the paediatrician or psychiatrist makes the diagnosis. There’s a limit of 8 of these sessions in a person’s lifetime.
Some private health insurance extras policies cover part of a psychology appointment, so it can be worth checking with your insurer. If you’re not sure what applies to you, ask when you enquire and we’ll talk it through before anything is booked.
Should I see a psychologist or a psychiatrist for ADHD?
It depends on what you’re hoping for. A psychologist can assess for ADHD and, where it fits, make a diagnosis. An assessment can help you understand yourself, and inform supports at work, study or home. Psychologists don’t prescribe medication.
In Victoria, ADHD medication is started by a psychiatrist, a paediatrician, or a GP who has completed endorsed ADHD training (for people aged 6 and over). Your regular GP may then be able to keep prescribing under that doctor’s instructions.
Doctors who prescribe make their own assessment, and they may or may not use a psychologist’s report as part of it. If medication is something you’d like to consider, it’s worth asking the doctor you plan to see whether they’ll take a psychologist’s assessment into account before you book one. We’re happy to talk through which pathway makes sense for you.
Do you see NDIS participants?
Yes. JD Therapy welcomes self-managed and plan-managed NDIS participants. The current NDIS intake is for self-managed and plan-managed psychology services, so NDIA-managed plans aren’t currently accepted. About NDIS psychology.
Can I have sessions by telehealth?
Yes. Telehealth appointments are available Australia-wide. We’ll discuss whether telehealth is appropriate for your needs before getting started. About telehealth.
Can a parent, partner or family member be involved?
When it’s helpful and you agree, family members can be involved in your care. Parent and caregiver consultations are also available.
What if I need to cancel?
Please give at least 48 hours’ notice. See the cancellation policy above.
